The 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (or COP26) at Glasgow ended with the US and China, two world superpowers and largest greenhouse gas emitters, making a joint statement to pledge to reduce emissions over the next year.

The US recently rejoined the Paris climate agreement under Biden and has made pledges to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce the use of fossil fuels.

China has also made similar pledges, to jointly reduce methane emission together with the US, as well as China's notorious coal industry. China is currently the world's largest spender on research into green technology.

Despite pledges by both China, the US and other Western states, NGOs have pointed to failures in all nations to meet their proposed emission cuts and other climate pledges. Historically, international green efforts have always been led by the US (before Trump) and the EU, however recently China has stepped up its own efforts on reducing climate change.

“Leave No Man Behind” is a military code often repeated and adhered to by various units and soldiers, most notably the U.S. military. The interpretation of the phrase is applied to the treatment and extraction of the seriously wounded, the recovery of the body of military members killed in action, and the attempts to rescue or trade for prisoners of war.

Alexander Lukashenko is a Belarusian politician who has served as the first president of Belarus since the establishment of the office on 20 July 1994.

Since October 2020, the EU has progressively imposed restrictive measures against Belarus. The measures were adopted in response to the fraudulent nature of the August 2020 presidential elections in Belarus, and the intimidation and violent repression of peaceful protesters, opposition members and journalists. The EU does not recognise results of the Belarus elections, condemning them as neither free, nor fair.

For months, Lukashenko has been accused of using illegal migrants as a tool to punish the European Union for imposing sanctions on his regime.

In July, Belarus loosened its restrictions on visas and increased flights on its state-run airline from the Middle East, allowing thousands of would-be migrants to arrive from Iraq, Syria and other countries. Belarusian security forces then funnelled the migrants to the borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia – all members of the European Union – and even gave them wire cutters to breach the fences.
An estimated 4,000 migrants are camped at the Polish border where the migrants are camped in a freezing forest, and perhaps 10,000 to 20,000 overall in Belarus. At least 11 have died in the cold.
